Children's Classics

Children's Classics

5 Minutes for Books
is hosting Children's Classics today. It's an opportunity to share about a childhood favorite. How do I pick just one? I finally decided on a book that I recently read with my daughter, Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I was a child of the 70's, so naturally I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie. I know I read several of the books, but I don't recall ever reading the first book in this series. When CJ got hooked on the Little House show, I decided to buy her the book set and read along with her (she's not the bookworm her Mama is). I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed Big Woods as much as I did. I think I didn't read it as a child because it takes place before the period covered by the TV show. As an adult, I liked learning about how Laura & her family lived before they moved to Plum Creek. I particularly enjoyed the simpler time (something near and dear to my heart these days) and the work ethic.

Wash on Monday,
Iron on Tuesday,
Mend on Wednesday,
Churn on Thursday,
Clean on Friday,
Bake on Saturday,
Rest on Sunday.

I could appreciate the book more as an adult. I enjoyed getting to know Ma, Pa, and Mary through Laura's eyes. The details she gives make it easy to picture their home and life in the Big Woods. I could almost hear the strains of Pa's fiddle, and wished I were there with them (though I'm not quite sure about the churning).

It was absolutely delightful to revisit this series. CJ & I will soon venture onto the next book, Little House on the Prairie. I can't think of a better way to spend Autumn!

Melissa,
This is one of my favorites too! I loved the show as a child and have read some of the books with my kids as an adult.
As a girl, I wanted to be Laura. :)

Blessings!

I just love those LHOP books too! And I've always wanted to do a sampler with the "Wash on Monday..." saying. Wouldn't that be fun?

Did you realize they extended this series to include books about Laura's mother and grandmother?

I liked Anne of Green Gables better than Little House.

Hope you can stop by to see my Childrens classic post.

Those are some of my absolute favorites too. I loved everything about those books when I was growing up.

I just read Little House in the Big Woods to my kids and they are anxious to move on to LHOP next.

That sounds interesting Melissa. I haven't heard the stories before LHOP. I might need to get that for us. Chloe loves the show...I think Cam likes the modern times better..ha..imagine that!

I loved the book series and tv series as a child. My favorite part in the Big Woods book is them playing with the pig bladder. I thought that was so cool when I was a kid!

I got the whole series in paperback one year for Christmas and I read all the books in two or three days. They remain very high on my all-time favorites list.

Amanda won't watch the show! And honestly, she doesn't have much interest in the books either. We read the first 2 together when she was younger. They are great read-alouds and they do have so much to say to us as adults. I read my books over and over, and Amanda now has my boxed set. I'm going to try to convince her to read some of the ones when they are older. Maybe I should just read them aloud and I'd get to enjoy them again too.

I grew up watching the show as well, but I never did read the books! Still haven't lol. Maybe I should add it to my list of books to read. Thanks for the great post.

I never saw the show but I read some of the books and loved them. I never read the little house in the big woods though.

I, too, loved these books. I actually didn't read them until I was an adult...a young adult with babies (and now I have grandbabies) I love sharing books with my grandchildren. Thanks for reminding me of these.
Great Books.
