The Celebration of Love

He is busy with projects and midterms. Our Valentine's dinner will have to wait. He's spending the evening preparing a group presentation. His time away from home tonight speaks more loudly of his love for me and our family than anything else could.

Every day is Valentine's Day.

My heart flutters at his words.

This is the 20th February 14th we've shared together. Two decades building a life that celebrates our love for God and for each other. And for the girl who's suddenly taller than her mama. I am a woman who loves words and he is a man of few. But who needs a store-bought card when everything he does whispers how much he loves me?

He agrees for me to pursue something my heart must, despite the complications and inevitable questions. His understanding, encouragement and support are far more lovely than the most poetic card.

He doesn't complain that the floors haven't been mopped and the clothes haven't been put away. His quiet acceptance is far more meaningful than jewelry that sparkles.

He stays awake long after the lights are extinguished, listening to my heart secrets there in the dark. Our conversations are richer than even the most exquisite chocolate.

It's not the stuff movies are made of.

It is much, much more.

My beloved is mine, and I am his. - Song of Solomon 2:16 (ESV)

Food for Thought

Have you read this post by Tim Challies? It just so happens that I was giving a lot of thought to this very subject this morning, as I was once again considering the place that social media has in my life.

Is this something you struggle with, too? Comments are open.

The Start of Our Anniversary Week

"Hey, you've got an anniversary Saturday."

"How many years?"

This, from the girls in my Sunday School class.

Yes, I do. It's 17.

"Awww..."

"Really?!"

"That's neat."

As he and I say, it's crazy cool.

"Awww..." (again)

In fact, he told me the other day that he's just as excited to be married to me now as he was 17 years ago.

"That's crazy sweet."

And they melted.

Truth be told, so did I.

There's a poignant scene in 13 Going On 30 where the adult Jenna describes an evening with Matt to a group of teen girls. Even though she appears to be a grown woman, the girl inside is caught up in the romance of it all. She proudly displays her goosebumps to the girls hanging on her every word.

Sharing with the girls in my class, I felt much like Jenna. The 15 year-old me who desperately needed love and attention still lingers. Never did she dream she'd find the love of such a man.

Or that nearly 17 years later, he could still give me goosebumps.

Don't Ask...

Time once again for Meredith's 10 on the 10th. Without further adieu, here are 10 things I've learned the hard way:

1.   A bike ramp immediately after a rain shower = a terrible nosebleed
2.   Shoes from an ad in the back of Seventeen magazine = a big waste of money
3.   Careless words = a broken relationship
4.   Primping while driving = a broken radiator grill
5.   Thinking my parents wouldn't find out that I __________ (you name it!) = ignorant
6.   Cutting my own hair = a lot of $$ spent to fix it
7.   Buy now, pay later = just plain stupid
8.   Believing the grass is greener = a big waste of time
9.   Believing real love happens just like the movies = a big reality check
10. Saying "I will never..." = words to be eaten later

Click on over to Mer's for more 10 on the 10th goodness!

Sometimes I Wish

~I actually knew what I think I know.

~My house was completely in order. Not spic and span...just more organized. I keep getting sooo close.

~I would more readily remember what it feels like to be a 6th grade girl.

~God would give me instructions that are as detailed as those He gave Moses for the building of the tabernacle.

~I could read R's mind (I said sometimes, right?)

~I was more loving.

~I was more lovable.

~I was more forgiving.

~I was less high maintenance.

~I could have a long talk to my Grandaddy. I've been missing him a lot lately.

~I was more disciplined.

~I could stop saying I so much!

~Jane Austen had written a sequel to Pride and Prejudice. I wonder how she envisioned Lizzy & Darcy's life together.

~Life was more like Little House on the Prairie

~The Huxtables were still around.

~Chocolate was one of the four food groups.

What do you wish?

10 on the 10th

Is it already the 10th of the month? Time for Mer's 10 on the 10th. In honor of Valentine's Day, I'm going to share my 10 favorite romance movies. In no particular order, they are:

1. Pride & Prejudice (Focus Films version). I know, it's not exactly true to the book. Still, I think it's a beautifully made film.

2. When Harry Met Sally. The original chick flick.

3. Sleepless in Seattle. Witty and charming, and a great cast to boot.

4. You've Got Mail. The reunion of Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan was definitely worth the wait.

5. Sweet Home Alabama. Patrick Dempsey and Josh Lucas. *swoon*

6. While You Were Sleeping. I love this movie as much for the supporting cast as for the lead actors.

7. Fireproof. What a love story should be.

8. The Philadelphia Story. No romance film list is complete without Cary Grant. I adore this movie!

9. Adam's Rib. Classic Kate Hepburn.

10. Pillow Talk. Classic Doris Day.

Do you have any faves that I've missed? Be sure to visit Meredith to check out the other entries.

Christmas Game - Final Thoughts

I'm taking a computer break this week. Between being sick with a horrible cold and wanting to focus on preparing my heart, I decided to make today's question the last.

This season has been different for us. R says he's more in the Christmas spirit than he's been in years.  We haven't bought many presents or gone many places. What we have done has been unhurried and enjoyable.  We've been more intentional, focusing more on THE GIFT instead of the customary holiday obligations. (And there are no credit card bills coming in January!) As my friend Meredith put it, Christmas feels more spacious. For once, Christmas feels more like a season than an exercise in spinning my wheels to get ready for one day that's over much too quickly.

It may just be the best Christmas ever.

What's most special about this Christmas for you?

Christmas Game - Day 3

What's your favorite Christmas special?

This question is easy for me to answer...hands down, The Year Without a Santa Claus.

All because of these guys...

They're too much!

A Christmas Game - Day 2

If you didn't play Day 1, please do. Now, on to Question 2 (and I did NOT mean for that to rhyme!)

What's your favorite Christmas tradition?

Individually - I love getting up in the morning, plugging in the tree and grabbing my coffee to spend time alone with my Jesus.

Family - Our Advent readings. (Although I must confess, we don't get to them every night.) I also love participating in our church's Angel Tree and Operation Christmas Child.

Church - Helping decorate the sanctuary, with people I love the most.

Maybe they're all the "churchy" answers, but I promise tomorrow won't be so serious!

Pondering...

Just some random things I'm thinking about these days.

~Why do I forget how big & how good God is? Just last week, He provided a gigantic blessing that's putting us in a much better position once R's job ends. Even though I'd been praying for it, He still took me by surprise.

~Why do I whine so much? Between the state of my house (please.don't.ask) and the job situation, I haven't felt much Christmas cheer. The decorating and sappy holiday movies are leaving me empty. Maybe God's trying to tell me something about the true meaning of Christmas.

~Why am I blogging? Haven't quite figured that one out yet.

~Why don't I have more patience? Seems I'm either blowing my top with CJ or R, or praying for God to REVEAL HIS PLAN ALREADY.

~Why can't I be content with the status quo? Haven't figured this one out yet, either.

~A self examination both humble and true must cause us to tremble before the living God. - Walter Wangerin, Jr., "Preparing for Jesus"

~It never was what we could accomplish that established a lasting relationship with God, but what God himself promises to accomplish for us. - Wangerin

~Our tendency to self-sufficiency can only be overcome when our situation is beyond our sufficiency. Only then will we learn experientially the sufficiency of Christ. - Susan Hunt, "Spiritual Mothering"

Creepy

The email was from someone I don't know. The subject was "Band A/Band B Concert - Question". (Except the band names were given.) The author greeted me by name. He said his internet research indicates that I'd seen these two bands in concert, and he's looking for information about the date and venue to assist Band A's webmaster.

I immediately freaked out because (a) I did in fact go to this concert circa 1985; (b) I've never mentioned it on my blog; and (c) the email came to my "safe" email...which has no trace of my maiden or married name.

So, how could he possibly know that I went to this concert?

A quick search for Band A's name in my Google reader showed a post that I'd commented on, where I wrote for the entire world wide web to see that I went to Band A /Band B concert when I was in high school. Obviously, the guy read that post & the comments, came over to my blog & emailed me from there.

Maybe you're thinking What's the big deal? Are you so embarrassed that you won't even tell us who the bands are? That's really not the point. It's nothing I'm ashamed of. But the fact that a complete stranger emailed me about it, without telling me how he got the information, seemed sorta' stalkerish & frightened me just a little.

I am very particular about what I share here. I try to blog honestly about what's going on in my life, but I don't share anything that I feel is inappropriate or crosses the boundaries of my family's privacy. Still, it was definitely creepy to have someone track me down based on a comment I'd left on another blog.

This incident has given me much food for thought. As I ponder the place blogging has in my life (and the place I have in blogging), I'm stepping back. Not completely, but noticeably. If and when I figure it out, I'll let you know.

On the Brink of Insanity

Hello, my name's Melissa. Apparently I DO still have a blog, even though I haven't posted anything meaningful in who knows how long. I didn't intend to take a hiatus. But, as a good friend and I were recently discussing, blogging is the easiest thing to take off a full plate.

What a full plate it's been.

The bathroom remodel? Well, I can't see the wall studs anymore. Praise Jesus...we have drywall! Hopefully the tile man cometh next week, and this nightmare will be behind me in just.a.couple.of.weeks. On the bright side, it's going to be gorgeous when it's done and I'm going to appreciate my bedroom more than ever. Nothing says "sanctuary" like having racks of clothes, boxes of shoes, and a tall medicine cabinet in your bedroom! To celebrate reclaiming my space, I found a stunning cream wingback chair at the thrift store today and snapped it right up for a new reading nook.

Another silver lining is that we've been motivated to do some other things around the house that have desperately needed to be done. Still miles to go, but at least it's a start.

Middle school? I'm happy to report that CJ is doing remarkably well. But balancing chemical equations and learning Spanish...in the SIXTH GRADE?!

Between homework and housework, I've come close to shutting down. Reminds me of life before the Year of Peace & Simplicity...and I don't like it one bit. I've been telling myself it's only for a season. I know I'll feel better once I can put everything back in it's place.

Of course, my spirits are lifting because my favorite time of year is upon us. Seems I spend most of the year longing for October thru February. Bonfires, flannel sheets (if I can find them!), hot tea, and curling up under my favorite blanket with a good book soothe my soul.

I'd like to say I'll be back soon, but I honestly don't know. (I just hope I return with as much zeal and insight as Lisa...who's ended her hiatus with some seriously great reading.)

In the meantime, friends, remember that it's all

10 on the 10th - September Edition

I haven't participated in Mer's 10 on the 10th in a while, but her list today was so fun that I'm totally copying it. So, here are 10 things that I'm enjoying right now:

1. Cooler temps. Praise Jesus, Amen.

2. College Football. My alma mater probably couldn't beat a high school team this year, but I enjoy watching SEC football.

3. The NFL season opens tonight...with my beloved Steelers playing the Titans. In case you hadn't guessed, football is my favorite sport.

4. Reading this book as part of Joanne's Read + Chat + Live. There's still plenty of time to join us, so come on!

5. My Senior High Girls' Sunday School class. I really have a bunch of awesome girls, and I seriously heart them!

6. CJ. My girl started middle school Tuesday. After the reality of that hit (and I shed just a couple of tears), I realized how much she's grown over the summer. There are still plenty of days with pre-teen attitude, but she's also assuming more responsibility around the house. LAtely, she's wanted to help cook practically every dinner...more accurately, she's wanted me to help her cook. I'm not complaining!

7. Pumpkin Muffins. We just made our first batch Monday.

8. Getting back into a routine. I enjoy the laid back, non-scheduled days of summer for a while, but I do love the routines we've established in our home in the past two years. Still trying to keep things peaceful and simple!

9. My favorite season. I'm an autumn and winter girl.

10. The progress we're making on the bathroom...at long last! We're 2 months in, and things have been S.L.O.W. But it looks like things are finally starting to move in the right direction. Honestly, it hasn't been so bad sharing a bathroom and having the contents of our closet stuffed into our room. (I guess Peru gave me some perspective on that.) We've been able to make some changes to make things more open/functional/pretty. And I've learned that we had WAY TOO MANY clothes! I told R that if we can live without the clothes we stored in the attic during this time, then we should just take them to consignment instead of trying to cram them back in. Thankfully, he agrees. Funny, our closet was the one area I never finished purging. I kept putting it off. I guess God had other plans.

If you've stuck with me this long, head over to Meredith's to see the other 10 on the 10th posts. But first, leave me a comment and let me know what you're enjoying these days.

Happy Birthday, Sis!

My first memory of her is watching my mom bathe her in the kitchen sink of our outdated farmhouse. Tiny with a head full of dark hair, she was the complete opposite of me. After all, I was a mature 5 1/2 (ALMOST 6) year old with princess-golden hair (hey...it's my story, so let me embellish a little!). I was fascinated by her little movements and sounds. And I was happy to have my very own LIVE doll baby!

Years went by. It wasn't much fun to have a toddler always dragging out my toys and putting them in places I couldn't find them. It really wasn't fun when I was stuck at Brownies one night until a family friend finally came to pick me up because my parents had the entire neighborhood searching for her. She decided to play hide-and-seek with my mom. Tucked under the hanging clothes in our closet, she heard my mom frantically calling her name & became too afraid to come out. My parents were too concerned with finding her that they didn't even think about me sitting on the steps at the Brownie shack, feeling very alone and very forgotten. Suddenly, I was NOT fascinated by her anymore!

Then came her "artsy" period. She bleached her jeans, dyed her hair & CUT MY CLOTHES. I could only stay out past curfew if I was picking her up from the skating rink (which I still, to this day, don't understand). She resisted my attempts to mother her (I wonder why?!). She did NOT want to be like me in any way, shape or form. I was the "golden child". She was the "black sheep". I studied. She socialized. I worked. She played. I obeyed (mostly). She rebelled with everything in her. We were polar opposites.

Flash forward through the squabbles, hurt feelings and words that should've never been spoken. I went to college and returned home to work. We both married. She had a son so much like her that every time I saw him, I was overwhelmed by memories of our childhood (just the good ones). Then she had a daughter. Six months later, I gave birth to CJ. And there she was, at the hospital, holding my baby and grinning from ear to ear. I knew our relationship would be forever changed.

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another,"What! You too? I thought I was the only one!" ~ C.S. Lewis

Throughout the past eleven years, my sister & I have been through a lot together. We've swapped war stories. I've given advice & she's listened. She's given advice & I've listened. I suddenly realized that younger doesn't mean not wiser, and older doesn't mean I know it all. We've fought battles together, spent hours on the phone, and even joked about moving our families to Alaska together (I'm still up for that, by the way!). She loves and respects my husband. Of course, we're crazy about the kids. And I would lay down my life for her.

The difference in our ages often means we don't share the same childhood memories, so our friendship is largely based on the women we've become as adults. Still, she's the only other person raised full-time in my home. We share DNA and a history no one else will ever understand. It took a long time to realize that. You see, God made us sisters. Then, when we were ready, He made us friends.

Happy Birthday, Sis! My life is certainly more interesting because of you, and I wouldn't have it any other way ;-)

Tuesday Thoughts

Thoughts jostling around in my head lately:

~I need to speak less and say more.

~If my pre-teen years were anything like CJ's have been so far, I owe my parents a HUGE, GINORMOUS apology.

~Perfectionism, may be adorable in me (ahem). In my daughter? Not so much.

~I'm ready for football season.

~Ditto for cooler weather.

~Weekends away are fun, but weekends at home are a gift from God.

~I don't thank my man enough for all he does for us.

~Discipline isn't always painful. It is always good.

~How much longer til the bathroom's finished?

~What needs to stay, and what needs to go (at home and in my heart)?

~Why did I let menu planning slide? It makes life so much easier!

~Am I spending and investing well (time, money, gifts, relationships)?

~Will we survive middle school?

~What does God want from me right now...today?

I'm certainly pre-occupied these days! What's going through your mind?

Around the House: May

I am:

~So ready for school to end, but not quite ready for CJ to be in middle school.

~Enjoying softball season with R and CJ. They both play. I'm happy to just cheer them on.

~Overjoyed that Kris won American Idol! He was one of my picks from the first week of the Top 13 (I hadn't seen him til then).

~Excited that R and I will be teaching youth Sunday School next year.

~Wearing my silver ring, and praying for CJ and all my girls to remain pure.

~Thrilled with my anniversary present. It came a week early, and I couldn't wait to start using it!

~Celebrating 16 years of marriage next week. It hasn't all been candlelight and roses but, apart from Jesus, it's been the greatest blessing of my life.

~Convicted by the Seeking Him Bible Study. Tough, but good.

~Thankful for godly friends, both near and far.

~Looking forward to a 3-day weekend filled with softball, yard work, and a quick trip to the beach.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
