The Week in Words A Day Late + What's on My Nightstand

http://breathoflifeministries.blogspot.com/2010/01/announcing-week-in-words.html

I'm still playing catch up at home, so I haven't had time to pick out my favorite quotes yet. I've highlighted so much of Hoping for Something Better: Refusing to Settle for Life as Usual, it looks like the yellow pages :-)

And since that's on my nightstand, I decided to be exceedingly lazy and make this my What's on My Nightstand Post, too. Just think of it as my service to you...giving you books that you can get great quotes from!

What's On Your Nightstand

~Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. I've been wanting it for a while. I couldn't resist it in the store last week, but it was okay because I had some extra fun money. I'm really looking forward to digging in.

~Watch Over Me. Lauren's review is here. I'm still in the middle of it, but I'd say her review is spot on.

~Family Feasts for $75 a Week: A Penny-wise Mom Shares Her Recipe for Cutting Hundreds from Your Monthly Food Bill. I used nearly an entire pad of post-its to mark the recipes I want to try in this one. Aside from the recipes, Mary gives some terrific and practical advice for saving money.

~In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto. Several bloggers have had good things to say about this book, and I'm hopeful it will help us eat healthier and cheaper.

Reading something that spoke to your heart? Link your Week in Words post below. If you've got a stack of books on your nightstand, head over to 5 Minutes for Books and link up there.

In Defense of Food is an interesting read--but I wouldn't really expect it to help you eat cheaper. It's more of an anti-industrial food manifesto (the movement has its pros and its cons-but expense probably falls in the "cons" category.)

I'm toying with getting Crazy Love--you'll have to write up a review when you get done.

I've seen Watch Over Me mentioned on several blogs -- looks good!

I'm reading a book Nancy Guthrie compiled about Easter readings, and I have her Hoping for Something Better on my shelf to read this spring.

I have “Hoping for Something Better” on my list, and I listened to "Crazy Love" a few months ago. A great book. I need to read it through slowly now. Enjoy!

$75 a week? That would be LOVELY! :) I tried reading Pollen before, but I ended up feeling too awful about our eating habits (not terrible, but not anywhere near perfect), and realizing that we're really not in a position to make many changes, so I stopped reading. (I should definitely go get an apple for a snack right now instead of a piece of chocolate, though, right??) :)

This is my first time participating in The Week in Words. Thanks for sharing about those books; they all sound good.

The $75 a week seems totally doable to me - with a monthly run to Costco for "staples" (like noodles, chicken, cheese, etc.) that we eat on a regular basis. But after the staples, I'm typically running about $45-50 a week. So maybe that balances out?

I'm curious about the book though! It has a very intriguing premise.

I think In Defense of Food is awesome, but it's a bit more "technical"? You might enjoy Animal Vegetable Miracle more, for the practical side... Same concept in both books, but AVM is an easier read, and very practical.

I just wanted to say "hello!"

This is my first stop here, and I am loving the concept of The Week in Words. I think I may have to participate soon! I have often thought of just making random posts as I run across things that make me think, but I've never done it. Now I have reason to!
